Mayor Says Reinstating State Aid Will Lead to Property Tax Relief

Mayor Chris Beutler today asked State lawmakers for help to reduce the local property tax burden by reinstating State aid to municipalities. Beutler testified before the Nebraska Legislature's Tax Modernization Committee at a public hearing in Norfolk. Beutler, a former State Senator, addressed the Committee as Mayor of Lincoln and as President of the League of Nebraska Municipalities.

Real Property Tax Credit for Tax Year 2013

The State of Nebraska will offset a portion of real property taxes levied in 2013. The Property Tax Credit Act provides a real property tax credit based upon the valuation of each parcel of real property compared to the valuation of all real property in the state. The total amount of credit available for statewide distribution in 2013 is $115 million. The property tax credit will be shown on tax statements as a credit after the full taxes levied.

Real Property Value Percentage Change 2012-2013

The Nebraska Department of Revenue, Property Assessment Division, has processed the 2013 Real Property Abstracts of Assessment filed by the 93 Nebraska county assessors. Preliminary analysis indicates that real property valuations have increased 8.76% from 2012 to 2013, an increase in valuation of approximately $13.57 billon
