LINCOLN, NE., October 22, 2007 — The Nebraska Department of Economic Development has awarded $6,268,176 grant funding to communities and local housing partnerships as part of the 2007 Nebraska Affordable Housing Program.
Grants are made available to fund housing projects statewide through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), HOME Investment partnership, and Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund (NAHTF) programs. All projects listed here benefit low- and moderate-income households.
“With readily available affordable housing as a key component to attracting new and expanding businesses, it is essential to ensure our communities are fully capable of providing housing and other amenities that people seek when searching for the ideal place to live and work,” said Governor Dave Heineman.
Employer Assisted Housing Programs receiving $601,000 throughout the state include:

Housing Development Corporation—A $295,000 NAHTF grant to purchase, rehabilitate and resell housing to 10 families living in Grand Island and employed by St. Francis Medical Center as part of an employer-assisted housing program.

Keith County HDC—A $106,000 NAHTF grant to provide assistance in the form of deferred non-interest bearing loans to 19 first-time homebuyers who have been employed by the American Shizuki Corporation for at least one year, and live within an approximately 50-mile radius of Ogallala (excluding Colorado). The American Shizuki Corporation will contribute down payment and closing cost assistance.

Southwest Nebraska Community Betterment Corporation—A $200,000 NAHTF grant to help 20 first-time homebuyers purchase homes in Perkins, Chase, Dundy, Hitchcock and Hayes counties as part of an employer-assisted housing program.

Projects receiving $910,660 in the Western Region (which includes the $106,000 award to Keith County HDC’s and $200,000 award to Southwest Nebraska Community Betterment Corporation’s Employer Assisted Housing Programs ) include:

High Plains CDC—Two awards. A $60,000 NAHTF grant to develop a regional strategy for the Panhandle to include an inventory of, and recommendation for, programs and services provided by Panhandle Community Services, Panhandle Area Development District, Scottsbluff/Terrytown/Gering, Western Nebraska Housing Opportunities and High Plains CDC. The program will impact people living in Dawes, Sioux, Sheridan, Box Butte, Scotts Bluff, Morrill, Garden, Banner, Kimball, Cheyenne, and Deuel counties; and a $101,760 NAHTF grant to provide down payment assistance to eight homebuyers living in Dawes, Sioux, Sheridan or Box Butte counties.

Southwest Nebraska Community Betterment Corporation—A $200,000 NAHTF grant to rehabilitate nine homes in Perkins County.

Western Nebraska Housing Opportunity—A $242,900 NAHTF grant to help 38 homebuyers purchase and rehabilitate homes in Scotts Bluff County.

Projects receiving $982,500 in the Central Region (which includes the $295,000 award to the Housing Development Corporation’s Employer Assisted Housing Program) include:

Central Nebraska Economic Development—A $150,000 NAHTF grant to provide down payment assistance for seven families who purchase homes in Blaine, Boyd, Brown, Cherry, Custer, Garfield, Greeley, Hamilton, Holt, Howard, Keya Paha, Loup, Merrick, Rock, Sherman, Valley or Wheeler counties, develop an employer-assisted housing program, and provide ongoing support for the organization’s homebuyer education program.

City of Ravenna—$279,400 CDBG funding to rehabilitate 13 owner-occupied homes within Ravenna.

Housing Development Corporation—A $258,100 NAHTF grant to help homebuyers purchase six newly-constructed homes in Hastings’ South Wood Subdivision.

Projects receiving $1,823,016 in the Northeast Region include:

City of Schuyler—$250,000 CDBG funding to help 10 homeowners in Schuyler rehabilitate their homes.

City of Wakefield—$235,600 CDBG funding to provide down payment assistance for approximately 10 homebuyers.

City of Wayne—A $387,416 NAHTF grant to build 17 homes and provide down payment assistance to nine homebuyers purchasing these homes.

NED, Inc.–A $400,000 NAHTF grant to build two homes and provide down payment assistance to 10 homebuyers (including those who purchase the new homes) in northeast Nebraska.

NeighborWorks Northeast Nebraska—A $300,000 NAHTF grant to purchase, rehabilitate and resell 10 properties to qualifying homebuyers living in Colfax and Platte counties.

Village of Emerson—$250,000 CDBG funding to help 10 homeowners in Emerson rehabilitate their homes.

Projects receiving $2,552,000 in the Southeast Region include:

City of Falls City—Two awards. $250,000 CDBG funding to rehabilitate 11 owner-occupied homes, and $250,000 CDBG funding to provide down payment assistance for 10 homebuyers. All properties are located in Falls City.

Lincoln Action Program HDC—Three awards. A $373,400 NAHTF grant to purchase, rehabilitate and resell seven properties in Lincoln’s Clinton Neighborhood, and a $258,500 NAHTF grant to implement a targeted owner-occupied rehabilitation program in this same neighborhood; and a $266,300 NAHTF grant to purchase, rehabilitate and resell four properties in Lincoln’s Hartley Neighborhood.

Midwest Housing Initiative—A $478,800 NAHTF grant to build 10 homes on Graham Park Drive in Seward.

Nebraska City—Two awards. $250,000 CDBG funding to help 10 homeowners in south central Nebraska City rehabilitate their homes; and $250,000 CDBG funding to provide down payment assistance for 12 homebuyers.

Thayer County Economic Development Alliance—A $175,000 NAHTF grant to provide down payment and rehabilitation assistance for six homebuyers.
