WASHINGTON, D.C. – August 27, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — A representative of the City Building and Safety Department said this morning that seven building code issues at the new Prime Place apartments remain unresolved, but none are considered life threatening. Officials conducted code inspections for the complex at 11th and “Y” streets last week before students were allowed to move in. Four of the issues deal with lighting for the parking area.
Terry Kathe, Building and Safety Manager, said inspectors ensure that apartment complexes are safe to inhabit within the building and life-safety codes adopted by the City.
“We take seriously allegations of defects found in new living facilities,” Kathe said. “The Department does not condone the cleanliness of the apartments and we understand the concern and frustration students and parents have for the conditions they found when moving in. However, the apartments, aside from two clogged drains and the need for one additional furnace damper, meet the requirements of the building and life-safety codes.”
Kathe said the City has urged the developer and contractor to finish cleaning, but has no authority to require them to do so.
